Police Department Reminds Everyone About "Back to School" Safety Tips
Westport Public Schools begin on Sept. 1 and the Police Department has been conducting high visibility enforcement efforts targeting traffic violators in school zones. The “Back to School” enforcement and education campaign is focusing on traffic safety in and around the school zones.

Westport and Green Bank, Utilities, Contractors, and Municipalities Awarded Title of “Change Prize Champion” in SunShot Prize Competition
The Town of Westport, along with its partners, has completed the first two milestones in the SunShot Prize: Race to 7-Day Solar, a national competition aiming to reduce the time it takes to “go solar” across the country.

Kings Highway North Bridge Over Willow Brook Down-Rated to 4 Ton Vehicle Weight Limit Effective Immediately
Effective immediately, the Kings Highway North Bridge (located on Kings Highway North between Canal Road and Main Street) has been down-rated to a 4-ton weight limit. The road will remain open and typical passenger vehicles are not affected by this load limit requirement.

ConnDOT Announces Portion of Compo Road North to be Closed Beginning August 22
North Compo Road will be closed between Main Street and Cross Highway for 30 days beginning August 22. The replacement of the culvert beneath the roadway necessitates full closure of this portion of Compo Road North.

Burying Hill Beach Lifeguard Schedule Announced
Effective August 15, there will be no lifeguards on duty at Burying Hill Beach from Monday through Friday each week. Lifeguards will be on duty Saturdays and Sundays only from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. through Sept. 5. Compo Beach will continue to have lifeguards on duty daily through Sept. 5.

The Career Coach will be in Westport on Thursday, August 11
The Career Coach will be at Westport Town Hall on Thursday, August 11. The Coach will offer a beginner’s class in Microsoft Excel 2007 from 10 a.m. – noon, followed by an intermediate class in Excel from 1 – 3 p.m.

Justices of the Peace Sought from Unaffiliated or Minor Party Members
Westport voters who are not members of a major political party and who are interested in becoming Justices of the Peace (JPs) should contact the Town Clerk’s office between now and Nov. 1. The term of these appointments shall be four years commencing Jan. 2, 2017.

Police Department Announces the addition of ATLAS, a Police Service Dog
The Westport Police Department has announced the addition of Police Service Dog (PSD) Atlas as the newest member of the Westport Police Department K9 Unit. PSD Atlas is a 19 month old German shepherd who was acquired from Grasso Shepherds and will be handled by Officer David Scinto.

DPW Begins Annual Roadway Crack Seal Program August 5
The Department of Public Works has scheduled the annual Roadway Crack Seal Program to begin on Friday, August 5. The work effort will be daily for one week and maintenance will be performed on approximately 8 to 10 miles of various roadways throughout town.

“Back to School” Program Begins August 8
The town’s 2016 “Back to School Program” will start Monday, August 8. This program offers gift cards to income-eligible families who have children in the Westport schools. Families can then purchase new backpacks and school supplies together.

Police Announce Citizens' Police Academy to Begin Sept. 8
The Westport Police Department has announced that it will be offering a Citizens’ Police Academy starting on Sept. 8, 2016. Participants will establish a better understanding of the role of the police department in the community. The academy can accommodate up to twenty-four community members.

Human Services Department Announces Designated Cooling Centers’ Hours
The Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave., will be open to the public as an officially designated “cooling center” until 4:30 p.m. today and on Saturday, July 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

P&Z Commission to Review Amendment to Zoning Regulations on July 28
Amendment #720 was submitted by the Landscape Committee of the P&Z Commission. The amendment proposes changes to Landscape Design Standards, in particular, requiring that landscaping of developed sites be brought up to current standards, updating the Landscape Type Standards diagram, the Landscape Type Standards diagram and Approved Tree List.

Free Shuttle Service to be Provided between the Imperial Avenue Lot and Saugatuck Station
The Imperial Avenue shuttle service will be free of charge to riders who utilize the Imperial Avenue parking lot and take the shuttle to and from the Saugatuck train station for the duration of the Saugatuck Train Station Lot #1 construction project.

P&Z Commission To Review Amendment to Zoning Regulations at July 21 Meeting
On July 21 the P&Z Commission is scheduled to review an amendment to the Westport Zoning Regulations. The amendment proposes allowing fitness centers and exercise facilities in the Restricted Office-Retail District (RORD #3), subject to certain restrictions and subject to Special Permit approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Free Shuttle Service to Saugatuck Station will be Provided from the Imperial Avenue Parking Lot
The Imperial Avenue shuttle service will be provided free of charge to commuters who use the Imperial Avenue lot and take the shuttle to and from the Saugatuck train station. This arrangement was made in conjunction with the Westport Transit District and its Directors for the duration of the Saugatuck Train Station Lot #1 construction project.

ConnDOT Resurfacing Project for Route 57 Will Continue Next Week
The ConnDOT resurfacing project for Route 57 in Westport is scheduled to continue on July 11. Paving is scheduled to begin the night of Monday, July 11 and end the morning of Wednesday, July 13.
