United Nations Day Celebration Scheduled for October 24
The Town of Westport and Bill Hass, President, UNA-USA Southwestern CT announce the celebration of UN Day on Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, Westport. The public is invited to attend.

Westport Public Works Department Announces 2016 Curbside Leaf Collection Program
The annual curbside leaf collection period will be from Nov. 1 through Dec. 5. Any leaves in biodegradable paper bags and placed on the curbside during this period will be collected by the Public Works Department. Residents living on private roadways must place bagged leaves at an intersecting town roadway. Leaves placed in plastic bags will not be picked up.

Historic District Commission Announces 2016 Preservation Awards
The Westport Historic District Commission has selected the recipients of the 2016 Historic Preservation Awards. The awards will be presented by First Selectman James S. Marpe, Historic District Commission Chair Francis Henkels, and members of the Historic District Commission at a ceremony on Monday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall Auditorium

The Domestic Violence Task Force to Hold a Safe House Collection Drive
The Westport Domestic Violence Task Force (DVTF) is holding a safe house collection drive from Oct. 17-Oct. 28 to benefit two safe houses managed by the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC).

Soles4Souls Campaign at Westport Town Hall and Center for Senior Activities
The Soles4Souls Campaign is underway in Westport. Through the month of October, in-kind donations of serviceable shoes may be placed in the boxes located in the lobbies of Town Hall (110 Myrtle Avenue) and the Center for Senior Activities (21 Imperial Avenue).

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The Westport Domestic Violence Task Force (WDVTF) is taking part in a number of awareness events beginning Friday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The Career Coach Returns on Oct. 13 With PowerPoint Classes
On Thursday, October 13, the Coach will offer a beginner’s class in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 from 10 a.m. – noon, followed by an intermediate class in PowerPoint 2007 from 1 – 3 p.m.

Dogs allowed at Compo Beach beginning Oct. 1
From Oct. 1 to March 31, 2017, dogs will be allowed in certain areas at Compo Beach under the regulations for animal control and leash restriction.

2016 "We Do Walkways" Program – for Fall/Winter Cleanup
The Westport Department of Human Services reminds Seniors that the Department offers a list of middle and high school students willing to work small outdoor jobs such as raking leaves or shoveling walkways. There is a suggested fee of $10 per hour. Seniors needing assistance may contact the Westport Department of Human Services at 203-341-1050.

Second quarter real estate taxes, personal property taxes, and sanitary sewer use and assessment charges are due Oct.1, 2016. Taxpayers have until Nov. 1, 2016 to pay taxes without penalty.

Fire Department Receives Grant from FM Global
The Westport Fire Department has received a $4,000 fire prevention grant from FM Global, a major commercial property insurer. The award will be used to assist with pre-fire planning activities in an effort to efficiently collect and track data related to local community buildings.
