Low impact development, or LID is an approach to land development that works with nature to manage stormwater as close to its source as possible.

LID employs principles that mimic natural landscape features to create functional and appealing site drainage that treats stormwater as a resource rather than a waste product.

By utilizing LID principles such as bioretention, rain gardens, vegetated rooftops, rain barrels and permeable pavements, stormwater can be slowed down and allowed to soak into the ground and be filtered of pollutants and sediment by natural processes before it reaches our wetlands, watercourses and Long Island Sound.
