Storm clouds around beach area

Stormwater runoff is generated when it rains or when the snow melts and the water rapidly washes over roads, parking lots, lawns and sidewalks, removing oil, debris, soil, fertilizer, and other pollutants from those surfaces.

The water and pollutants then flow directly into our waterways or into nearby storm drains and are carried, untreated into Long Island Sound. Simply stated, what we do to the land, we do to the water.

To protect these resources, Westport as well as many others towns in Connecticut are implementing best management practices to filter out many pollutants or prevent pollution at its source.
