A. GENERAL RULES
- Solicitation of sale of goods or services for commercial reasons without the written permission of the Westport Parks and Recreation Department is prohibited.
- Glass bottles and glass containers are prohibited.
- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at Compo Beach facility (parking lots, athletic fields, basketball courts, beach front area, and grass area) without a written permit issued by the Parks and Recreation Department, the exception being the South Beach picnic area.
- Beer kegs or other containers of beer in excess of one liter is prohibited.
- Smoking or vaping any cannabis-type substance or Tabacco product is prohibited within the boundary of all Town-owned athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, pools, and beaches, including but not limited to, concession areas, beach parking lots, and athletic field parking lots. In addition, smoking or vaping any cannabis-type substance or Tabacco product is prohibited within 25 feet of all Town-owned athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, and pools.
- Amplified music: including bands and DJs, without the written permission of the Parks and Recreation Department is prohibited.
- From April 1 to Sept. 30 animals are prohibited at the beaches either in or out of vehicles except when going to and from boat moored at Ned Dimes Marina (at Compo Beach). Beaches are defined to include the water adjacent to the property, the sand areas adjacent to the water, the parking areas, grass areas, playing areas and roads, except that dogs are permitted in vehicles and, if on leash, going to and from such vehicles in the Soundview Parking lot at all times other than entering the Soundview Parking lot in vehicles between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays and before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. weekends & holidays.
- Persons with dog(s) at Ned Dimes Marina (at Compo Beach) and E. R. Strait Marina must have dog(s) on a leash.
- Restrooms on south and east beach are open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from May 1 to Sept. 30. The food concession at Compo is available May 1 to Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Exact dates and times may vary.
- The Pavilion at Compo is designated for public use and may not be reserved for private parties. Cooking and possession of alcohol in this area is strictly prohibited.
B. ADMISSION AND PARKING
Motor vehicles and motorcycles may enter town beaches with a valid Parks and Recreation Department Beach Parking Emblem or by paying the daily fee. (NOTE: Daily fee is available at Compo and Burying Hill only.)
Beach operating hours and dates
a) Compo Beach - May 1 to Sept. 30 hours are 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. All cars must vacate by midnight.
b) Soundview Lot - May 1 to Sept. 30 opens at 7 a.m. closes at 10 p.m.
c) Longshore Marina, Longshore pool parking lots – Season is Saturday before Memorial Day to Labor Day.
d) Old Mill Beach - May 1 to Sept. 30 from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
e) Burying Hill Beach - Saturday before Memorial Day to Labor Day; hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Compo Beach will close at 4 p.m. on the evening of the annual Town Fireworks Display. All vehicles without special fireworks ticket must vacate the beach.
Beaches may be closed at any time by the Parks and Recreation Department due to lack of available parking or in the interest of public safety. Temporary emblems may be issued at the discretion of the Parks and Recreation Department.
C. BEACHES, WATERFRONT & BOATING
- Lifeguard services are provided at Compo and Burying Hill Beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (except as posted). (Note: South Beach – No Lifeguards - Swim at your own risk.)
- Swimming shall be allowed in designated bathing/swim areas only. Areas are designated by red and white swim buoys.
- Watercraft, including windsurfers and aircraft, are prohibited from swim area.
- The use of flotation devices (other than inflatable flotation devices) may be used on the main beach at the discretion of the lifeguard on duty. A child using a personal flotation device MUST be accompanied in the water by an adult. All Styrofoam and inflatable bubbles are prohibited at all beaches.
- No person shall engage in any athletics, games or contest except swimming at any public beach, except in areas designated for that purpose by the Westport Parks and Recreation Department. Boats and windsurfers may enter the beach area only with current launch/ramp permit. Daily launch permits are available only with current beach emblem.
- All watercraft (including windsurfers) are prohibited from launching off or beaching on beachfront areas between April 15 and November 1, except the designated sailing area on South Beach.
- Skateboards are prohibited from parking lots and roadways.
- Pitching of tents or overnight camping is prohibited on the beaches except in conjunction with an event sanctioned by the Westport Parks and Recreation Department.
- Open burning is prohibited unless authorized by both the Parks and Recreation Department and the Fire Marshall's office.
- Fishing in bathing/swim area is prohibited unless permission is granted by the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Use of scuba and skin diving equipment is prohibited off all beachfront property, unless written permission is granted by the Westport Parks and Recreation beach staff.
- Compo Beach playground opens at sunrise and closes at sunset.
D. BATHOUSE & LOCKER ROOMS
- Bathhouse and locker rooms are available on a seasonal basis only. Bathhouse lockers are open May 1 to Sept. 30. Contact the Parks and Recreation office at (203) 341-5152 for further information.
- Bathhouse assignee is to provide a lock as of June 1 and shall keep the door locked during the season. Failure to comply may result in loss of locker.
- Bathhouse locker to be cleaned out no later than Sept. 30. If not, lock will be cut off and contents in locker will be discarded and you will be subject to loss of locker.
E. PICNIC RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Glass bottles and glass containers are prohibited.
- Alcoholic beverages are only permitted on South Beach.
- Beer containers in excess of one liter are prohibited without written permission of the Parks and Recreation Dept.
- Garbage must be bagged and tied and put into a garbage can.
- Amplified music without written permission of the Parks and Recreation Dept. is prohibited.
- Open burning is prohibited unless authorized by both the Parks and Recreation Department and the Fire Marshall's office.
- Reservation of picnic tables is prohibited.
- Tents can not be used without Parks and Recreation Department written approval.
