What is light pollution?

Light pollution is the introduction of excessive or misdirected artificial light into the natural environment.

What are the impacts of light pollution?

Light pollution disrupts the natural cycles of animals, affecting their mating, foraging, communication and sleep. Bright outdoor lights can draw or disorient animals that are attracted to or navigate by light sources. Every year, millions of migrating birds die in collisions caused by light pollution. While lighting is a less obvious source of pollution, it can be just as damaging to ecosystems.

What can I do to help?

  • When installing new outdoor lighting fixtures, look for shielded and downwards facing fixtures

  • Shop for bulbs that are warmer colored, preferably with a color temperature of no more than 3000 Kelvins

  • Consider putting your lighting on a timer or a motion detector
