The Registrar of Voters office is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may register to vote in person during those hours. You may also register by completing the online form, or by downloading the form from this page and mailing to our office.
Each of the two major political parties — Republican and Democratic — is represented by a Registrar of Voters. Either Registrar (or Assistant or Deputy Registrar) can register and enroll new voters regardless of party affiliation.
In addition to registering new voters, the Registrars are deeply involved in every election,
Voters may choose not to affiliate with any political party. However, only those enrolled in a political party may vote in a primary held by that political party. Enrolling in a party does not commit the voter's choice in a regular, general election. Connecticut State law dictates a three-month period as a voter registered in a party to switch from one party to another.
Although the two Registrars serve the town, their work is governed by state statute and federal election law.
The most recent and comprehensive legislation which governs the way this office operates is the National Voter Registration Act which went into effect January 1, 1995. This act also lets new residents become voters when they register their cars or obtain/renew a driver's license.
