Each of the two major political parties — Republican and Democratic — is represented by a Registrar of Voters. These Registrars of Voters are elected, as provided in the General Statutes, at every other biennial state election for terms of four years beginning the Wednesday following the first Monday of the January next succeeding their election.

Either Registrar (or Assistant Registrar) can register and enroll new voters regardless of their party affiliation. In addition to registering new voters, the Registrars are deeply involved in every election, primary, or referendum to ensure that voting machines are programmed and polling places are properly set up and staffed. They also send notices to all registered households informing them of the hours, dates, and locations of upcoming elections.
