I have never heard of a Transfer Station, what is it?
A transfer station is a collection facility for trash and recycling streams which are regularly ‘transferred’ by trailers to larger processing and recycling facilities.
I am a new resident of Westport. How do I dispose of my trash and recycling?
The Town of Westport does not have Municipal Trash or Recycling pick-up. Instead, Westport residents are able to dispose of their trash and recycling in either of two ways.
- Residents may bring their trash and recycling to the Transfer Station themselves at little to no cost.
- Residents can contract with a private, licensed hauler to transport their trash and recycling to the transfer station on their behalf. See the link below for a list of refuse haulers licensed in the Town of Westport.
I am a new resident, and my Driver’s License still has my old address, what can I use as proof of residency at the Transfer Station?
New residents who may still have licenses or car registrations from out of town, may use a mortgage statement, deed, lease, or utility bill as proof of residency to use the transfer station or obtain a sticker.
How much does it cost to use the Transfer Station?
At this time, Westport residents may use the Transfer Station at no charge, so long as they dispose of acceptable types of trash and recycling and do not exceed the maximum bag limit.
Larger amounts of trash, some appliances, and tires require residents to purchase dump tickets at Town Hall. Please review the fee schedule for more detailed information.
What types of trash can I throw out at the Transfer Station?
Westport residents may dispose of acceptable types of household trash during regular business hours.
If you have questions about a specific item, please call the Department of Public Works offices at 203-341-1120.
What can I recycle at the Transfer Station?
The Town of Westport follows the RecycleCT guidelines. You can access the RecycleCT Wizard search engine at the link below to see what items are acceptable to put in your recycling bin, https://www.recyclect.com, or call the Department of Public Works office at 203-341-1120.
Generally, residents may use the Transfer Station to recycle their paper, glass, metal cans and beverage containers. Additionally, residents may recycle food scraps, latex and oil paints and stains, computers & electronics, textiles, cardboard, lightbulbs, batteries, motor oil & antifreeze and can even participate in Westport’s Separate Glass Recycling Pilot Program.
How can I responsibly dispose of hazardous household items such as pesticides, cleaners, and old gasoline?
This is such an important question. When disposed of improperly, products such as chemical cleaners, gasoline and pesticides can pollute our land or water and jeopardize public health. That is why Westport, in cooperation with five other municipalities, sponsor Household Hazardous Waste Days each year. These events provide residents with a safe way to dispose of their household hazardous waste.
Hazardous Waste Events are usually scheduled monthly from April to September of each year, with a new calendar posted by March of each year.

Remember that you can recycle paint, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, lightbulbs, and even electronics at the Transfer Station six days a week, year-round.
