DISPOSAL & RECYCLING FACILITIES ARE FOR WESTPORT RESIDENTS ONLY.
Food Scrap Recycling is part of a Town-wide effort to decrease residential food waste by at least 25%. Why is decreasing food waste important? Food waste is one of the heaviest, wettest, and most expensive waste streams for the Town of Westport to process, and nearly one out of every four bags of groceries end up in the trash. In fact, if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind China and the US!
Why Recycle Food Waste? Food waste is not trash! It can become a valuable resource when turned into compost. Recycling food scraps into compost captures its nutrients and energy and returns them to the environment.
How can I participate in the Westport Food Scrap Recycling Program?
You must be a Westport resident to participate in the Food Scrap Recycling Program.
You will also need a covered container to collect and transport your food scraps to the Westport Transfer Station’s NEW FOOD WASTE DROP-OFF AREA - that is all you need to participate!
For your convenience, Sustainable Westport has made a $25 Complete STARTER KIT available for purchase at Earthplace, the Nature Discovery Center, 10 Woodside Lane, Westport.
