• Is my house connected to the public sewer system, or is a private septic system?

• Is sewer available on my street?
  • Sewer service is available in many parts of town, but as a rule is not available north of the Merritt Parkway (Route 15). Please contact Public Works at 203-341-1120 for specific location/address availability.

• Will sewer be installed on my street in the future? 
  • The town does not initiate sewer construction for areas not currently being served. New sewer construction is done in response to a petition  which must have a majority of favorable signatures from the homeowners between the point where sewer exists to the point where sewer is wanted.
• Now that sewer is available on my street, how do I connect to it? 
  • After a new sewer line has been inspected by the town, instruction will be given on the steps necessary to connect. Basically, it involves the individual resident getting prices from a licensed and bonded drainlayer followed by a simple permit process.
• Do you recommend certain contractors for this job?

• How is my sewer bill calculated?
  • Sewer Billing Calculation (Water Consumption Based, CCF)

    The Town of Westport’s sewer billing is based on the previous fiscal year’s audited expenditures to operate and maintain the town-wide sewage collection system and the Water Pollution Control Facility (Treatment Plant) divided by the water consumption from the total number properties connected to the sewer system by the end of that fiscal year. Water consumption is measured in “Hundred Cubic Feet” (CCF) increments, NOT gallons. The Town of Westport obtains, from the Aquarion Water Company, the water meter readings for all properties that are connected to the Town’s sewer system. The meter readings utilized are November, December, January, February, and March. These five months of consumption, representing winter flows best represent the actual contribution that a given property will discharge to the sewer. These five months of consumption are added together then multiplied by 2.4 to estimate a full year of flow. This methodology minimizes any extraneous exterior water use (sprinklers, pools) and will follow the concept that “a gallon of flow in = a gallon of flow out”.
