 Pistol Permit Renewal Information

Announcement from the State of Connecticut for New Pistol Permit Applicants Only*:
(*Pistol permit renewals are processed by the Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection (DESPP).

Pistol permit applications may be picked up at the Westport Police Department or downloaded from our website. You must first obtain a local pistol permit before you can apply for a state permit. In addition to completing all forms, you are required to complete a handgun safety course, which must consist of no less than the NRA's "Basic Pistol Course," prior to submitting the application. The NRA's "Home Firearms Safety Course" and "First Steps Pistol Orientation Program" are not approved courses. 

Live fire is also required. Computer-generated programs, dry-fire, other simulated shooting tools, plastic bullets, air guns or any other alternatives are not acceptable. Students must fire a semi-automatic pistol or revolver.

When applying for a State of Connecticut Pistol Permit in the Town of Westport, the following is required:

1. You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application submission and a Town of Westport Resident. (Proof is required)

2. Completed and NOTARIZED State of Connecticut Pistol Permit/Eligibility Certificate Application DPS-799-C (current form Rev: 03/03/21 will only be accepted).

3. Bank Certified check or Money Order. All checks MUST be a bank certified check, Money Order or Postal Money Order made payable to Town of Westport in the amount of $70.00.

4. Two forms of identification: Please make a PHOTO COPY of your Birth Certificate OR your valid US Passport AND a valid Operator’s License OR Government ID. (Legal resident, Alien Registration Card, VISA, I-94).

5. Your original certificate from an approved firearms safety course. DESPP Approved Pistol Safety Course with Live Fire. (NRA Basic Pistol or Approved)

6. Go to DESPP Web link  https://ct.flexcheck.us.idemia.io/CCHRSPreEnroll/ and use Westport Police Pistol Permit Access Code (2E21-AA92). Fill out the required information and submit payment of $88.25. Once you submit your information and payment, you will be given a transaction code. You will need to bring your transaction code to your appointment. 

Your fingerprints cannot be taken unless you have the transaction code 

7. You must sign and date the attached “FBI Privacy Act Statement” and “Noncriminal Justice Applicant’s Privacy Rights” forms included in the Pistol Permit Application. Please submit them with your application. 

8. Once you have your Money Order, Postal Money Order or bank check in the amount of $70.00, required documentation, Transaction Code and notarized application please call to make an appointment with Detective Lauria. Fingerprinting will be completed at this appointment.

At the time of appointment there will be a $10.00 Fingerprint Fee that can be paid cash or personal check at the records window.  

9. Appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday between 10:30AM to 2:30PM. No weekend or holiday Appointments. 

At the time of your appointment, you will submit your application, required paperwork, two payments ($70.00 Money Order, Postal Money Order or Bank Check and $10.00 cash). You will be fingerprinted on the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).  

Please hydrate your hands with lotion for one week prior to appointment.

Please do not call for updates on your permit. The State and the FBI do not give this Department updates on your pistol permit. Processing could take over 3 months.

Long Gun Eligibility Certificates and Ammunition Certificates

The Westport Police Department does not accept applications for these certificates or issue them. They are obtained through the CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. For more information and available online forms click here.
