It is the policy of the Westport Police Department to store found property properly and to return that property to its rightful owner whenever possible. Unclaimed property disposed of shall be in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

If you believe you may be the owner of lost property, call the WPD Property and Evidence Officer at 203-341-6000. Be prepared to describe the property in detail and/or provide proof of ownership.

Property not claimed within 6 months of advertisement will be returned to the finder (if requested) or disposed of, as will property not claimed by the rightful owner within 60 days after being notified by mail and/or telephone.

DEFINITIONS

Found property: Property which has been found by an officer or a private citizen and is of no apparent evidentiary value or contraband.

Finder: The person who discovers or comes into the possession of personal property to which he/she is not the rightful owner and otherwise has no claim at the time of finding and gives the property over to the Westport Police Department.

Rightful owner: The person who is identified at the time of report or at a later date as the legal owner of found property.
