The Conservation Commission consists of seven members, appointed by the First Selectman for four year terms. No more than four members may be of the same political party.

In addition, there are three alternate members appointed for two year terms. No more than two alternate members may belong to the same political party.

Having all the powers and duties conferred or imposed by the General Statutes on Conservation Commissions, the Commission is charged with the protection of the fragile water resources in Westport. Through state and local laws it governs all proposed land use, activity or construction that is near or within a wetland, watercourse, or waterway.
